Charitable giving was a key part of Roy Mullet’s life – and it’s a value he passed on to his children, as well as his peers.
Mullet served as President of Excel Industries, a leading manufacturer of outdoor power equipment headquartered in Hesston, Kansas, for more than 20 years. Throughout his tenure as president, he prioritized giving and tithing.
Even before he became president of Excel – back when he operated a farm – he was committed to using his money for good. His son, Bob, recalls his father writing a check every Sunday morning before the family headed to church. Mullet even allocated a percentage of his paycheck to fund that he would use to help others.
“Roy had strong feelings about tithing. He believed charitable giving is the right thing to do,” Bob Mullet said.
Excel’s business began to take off after it launched the zero-turn mower in 1964, and as the company grew, so did Mullet’s generosity.
Roy encouraged shareholders to create donor advised funds through Everence®. Excel would allocate funds to the donor advised funds, and shareholders could choose to donate their money where they pleased.
“Everence worked really well with us in making all that happen,” said Bob Mullet, who served as Vice President of Excel Industries from 1993 to 2017.
Excel Industries worked as an engine of philanthropy, resulting in joyful thriving community projects, and even more than will ever be known.
“It was not for personal reward,” Bob Mullet said. “And there was never a burden to give. It was all voluntary, and Roy led by example.”
